Dental screening and fluoride varnish program

Dental screening card and dental hygienist looking in a child 's open mouth

This program is open to children 17 years of age and under, offering dental screening and fluoride varnish in schools and other child care settings.

  • Dental screening is done by a dental hygienist. They examine the child’s mouth using a dental mirror, to look for obvious dental concerns.
  • A dental screening card is sent home to share results with parents. If tooth decay or other problems are seen, a visit to the dentist is recommended.
  • Fluoride varnish helps to prevent tooth decay and makes the teeth stronger. It may be recommended for your child.

Dental screening in schools

Our dental staff visit elementary schools each year to provide dental screening.

We screen all children in kindergarten and Grade 2 for dental problems that need to be seen by a dentist. Students from other grades may also be screened.

If your child’s grade is being screened, you will receive a letter from the school to let you know. Parents can opt-out of dental screening by sending a letter to KFL&A Public Health.

The information that we collect helps us monitor the dental health of children in our community.

Dental screening is required each year in all elementary schools, under the Ontario Regulation 570, School Health Programs and Services of the Health Protection and Promotion Act.

Dental screening for babies to preschool age in the community

We offer dental screening and fluoride varnish at some licensed childcare centres and early years programs. Parents can choose if they would like their child to be screened.

Dental screening in our hygiene clinics

We provide dental screening and fluoride varnish at our dental hygiene clinics for children 17 years of age and under, who have not been screened in school or in the community.
