The smoking rates in the KFL&A area have decreased a lot over the past 20 years but the tobacco industry has continued to work hard to recruit new, young smokers.
Some people think that smoking reduces stress, but it actually has the opposite effect on the body. The physical effects that smoking activates in the body can cause stress, not reduce it. These include increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, and tensing muscles. Staying smoke-free and dealing with stress in a healthy way is best.

“For me, Physical activity has always been a great way to take my mind off stressful situations. When the weather’s nice, I enjoy biking down by the waterfront. Sometimes it feels like I’m constantly on the go, so I try to prioritize sleep to make sure that I have energy for the day ahead! I also like listening to music on my record player at home to relax and unwind. It’s taken me awhile to learn healthy ways to manage stress, but I’ve found what works for me!”
“Sometimes I feel overwhelmed trying to juggle school, a part time job, and my relationships. I try to prioritize making time for things that make me happy, especially when I’m feeling stressed. Getting a walk or run in always puts me in a better mood. I also love cooking! Picking up fresh food from the Farmer’s Market and cooking while listening to a podcast or music helps me relax. Spending time with my dogs always makes me feel better too!”
“There are lots of great ways to manage stress without turning to tobacco! I started teaching myself the ukulele for fun. It’s my new favourite thing, and a great stress-reliever! Going for walks and hikes is another way I manage my stress. There are lots of great trails around here, and I love heading out with my dog to get some fresh air. I also try to stay connected with my family and friends as much as possible.”
Finding the right kind of strategies to help cope with stress might take time, but don’t give up, there are lots of resources and options available. It’s important to find what works for you.
