Community partners in Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox & Addington (KFL&A) are working together to develop a community drug strategy to address and respond to substance use in our community.
The key commitments of the Community Drug Strategy are to:
- preserve the health and safety of those who use drugs,
- reduce opioid overdose mortality in KFL&A’s at-risk population, and
- reduce the harms associated with licit and illicit use of opioids.
Four-pillar approach to substance use in KFL&A
A four-pillar approach to substance use is being adopted for the KFL&A community drug strategy and opioid action plan. The four-pillar approach includes:
- Prevention: Preventing problematic drug and substance use.
- Harm reduction: Supporting measures that reduce the negative consequences of drug and substance use without requiring cessation.
- Treatment: Supporting innovative approaches to treatment and rehabilitation.
- Enforcement: Addressing illicit drug production, supply, and distribution.
Active surveillance is the foundation for the KFL&A community drug strategy and supports the four pillars with data and insight into the local conditions.
