Results of radon testing in licensed child care centres in KFL&A
Between October 2018 and March 2019, KFL&A Public Health tested radon levels in all 53 licensed child care centers in KFL&A.
- 4% of samples taken were above Health Canada’s guideline of 200+ Bq/m3
- 13% of samples taken were above the World Health Organization’s radon guideline of 100 Bq/m3
- 87 % of samples taken were below 100 Bq/m3
- The median radon level for the tested child care centers was 18 Bq/m3.

Next steps
- Child care centers with radon levels above 200 Bq/m3 are required to remediate within 2 years.
- KFL&A Public Health has provided assistance with radon mitigation efforts to some child care centers.
- KFL&A Public Health will re-test child care centers after radon remediation to verify the continued performance of the radon-reduction system.
