Sealants are protective coatings for back teeth
- A dental sealant is a plastic material that is placed on the chewing surfaces of a child's back teeth.
- It is a quick and simple procedure, sealants are painted onto the tooth surface with a soft brush. A special light is used to help the sealant harden.
- Sealants usually last for several years.
Sealants prevent tooth decay
- Adult molars can have deep pits and grooves in the chewing surface that can trap food and dental plaque, which can cause cavities.
- Sealants prevent cavities by forming a barrier (or coating), protecting the tooth’s enamel by keeping plaque and food out of these deep grooves.
Apply sealants soon after permanent teeth erupt
- It is best to place sealants soon after a permanent tooth has come in. This protects the surface of the tooth from developing a cavity.
- First permanent molars: between 5 to 7 years of age (approximately).
- Second permanent molars: between 11 to 14 years of age (approximately).
