Interpretation:
Figure 1 displays the crude mortality rates for KFL&A per 100,000 population. The crude rate of mortality in KFL&A has increased slightly over the last 30 years. Figure 2 displays the age-standardized mortality rates for KFL&A and Ontario per 100,000 population. Age-standardizations adjust or controls for the differences in population structure and provides a single summary measure for comparison of populations. For both KFL&A and Ontario, the age-standardized mortality rates are decreasing. KFL&A's age-standardized mortality rates are slightly, but significantly, higher than Ontario's.
Why are our crude mortality rates increasing and our age-standardized mortality rates decreasing? Age-standardization takes our age-specific mortality rates and applies them to the 1991 Canadian Standard population. So, our age-specific mortality rates may actually decreasing, (for example, the proportion of people aged 65+ dying out of all the people aged 65+ may be decreasing) but the reason our crude mortality rates are increasing is that we have more people in the 65+ age group.
For example, if in 2000, we observed a 5% age-specific mortality rate in those aged 65 to 70, and we had 1000 people in that age category, we would observe 50 deaths. If in 2015, we now observed a 4% age-specific mortality rate in those aged 65 to 70, yet we now had 1500 people in that age category, we would observe that 60 people would die. Thus, we have a decrease in age-specific mortality rate and an increase in crude mortality.
Figure 3 (below) shows that the proportion of our population that is aging is increasing over time. We also know that that age-specific mortality rates increase with increasing age groups. Thus, as our population ages, we will expect to observe a higher mortality rate.

Population pyramids from 1986 to 2016 in KFL&A |
Figure 3. Population pyramids from 1986 to 2016 in KFL&A

Figure 3 displays population pyramids every five years for KFL&A from 1986 to 2016. In 1986, there is a 'bulge' in the population in the 20-34 age group. Some people refer to this bulge as the 'baby boom', a period of greatly increased birth rate following World War Two. Five year later in 1991, the bulge can now be seen in the 25-39 age group. Most recently, in the project population for 2016, the bulge is around the 45-59 age group.
