KINGSTON— In celebration of National Non-Smoking Week from January 20 to 26 2019, KFL&A Public Health is encouraging local residents to quit smoking and to share their personal quitting stories on social media by tagging them with #QuitStories.

Martha, a local #QuitStories participant, discusses how planning for her future was motivation to quit smoking, “I could remember many moments during my quit smoking journey, thinking about having a family in the future, and how I had to quit smoking to be healthy enough for my babies.  It’s now almost two years since I quit smoking, and I am married with twins on the way.”

Martha is just one of many community members who shared their #QuitStories with others. There is no better teacher than the voice of experience,” said Debra Vine, Public Health Nurse at KFL&A Public Health. “When it comes to quitting tobacco, our #QuitStories participants have valuable insights to share. Martha’s story, along with many others’ stories, can be an important resource for smokers who want to quit. Their stories are full of practical tips about what works when people quit smoking, and the benefits of a smoke-free life they might get to enjoy.”

National Non-Smoking Week is a nation-wide effort to educate Canadians about the dangers of smoking and has worked towards creating a smoke-free society for almost four decades. While Ontario’s smoking rates have declined, there are still thousands of local residents who continue to smoke, and smoking remains the leading cause of preventable illness and death in Ontario. Smoking increases risk of developing major health effects, including: cancer, heart disease, lung disease, stroke, or other complications.

The #QuitStories campaign continues through 2019 and related videos and cessation resources can be found by visiting www.kflaph.ca/quitstories.
