Local Mosquitoes Test Positive for West Nile Virus

Kingston – Mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus (WNV) have been identified in the Kingston, Frontenac, and Lennox & Addington (KFL&A) region. Infected mosquitoes have been identified in both Kingston and Napanee. KFL&A Public Health collects and tests mosquitoes from various sites throughout the region every year for the presence of WNV. The last time mosquitoes carrying the virus were identified in KFL&A was in 2013. KFL&A Public Health has had no reported human cases this year.

Reminder to watch for blue-green algae in local waterways
Kingston –KFL&A Public Health is reminding residents that blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) is a common seasonal occurrence in regional waterways. These bacteria occur worldwide, and some species produce toxins that can affect animals and humans.

ALERT: Five Overdoses from Fentanyl in the Hastings and KFL&A Area
Kingston –KFL&A Public Health is issuing an alert to warn residents about five fentanyl overdoses that have occurred in the Hastings and Prince Edward County and Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox & Addington areas over the past two days. People who overdosed required paramedical services and further resuscitation in the hospital. One suffered a seizure.

Kingston, July 26, 2017 - Sugary drinks are just about everywhere, and they are being marketed more heavily now than ever before. What was once an occasional drink, is now being consumed daily by many children in our community. KFL&A Public Health has launched a Choose Water campaign, encouraging parents to skip the sugary drinks and instead, offer water to their children.

Kingston comes out on top in national event for sixth year in a row

Kingston— Kingston, once again, has achieved first place among cities of its size in the national Commuter Challenge event. During the event, which ran from June 4 – 10, Kingston residents collectively travelled 48,951 kilometers, avoided 8,156 kilograms of carbon dioxide, saved 3,340 litres of fuel and burned 530,577 calories by using active and sustainable modes of transportation instead of using their vehicles to get to and from their destinations.

KFL&A Public Health Monitoring Water Quality at Public Beaches

Kingston - KFL&A Public Health has commenced monitoring the water quality at municipally owned or operated bathing beaches within the Kingston, Frontenac, and Lennox & Addington area. Monitoring is done weekly from early June until the end of August, and includes a visual inspection of beach conditions and testing for bacteria.
Signs warning against swimming are posted when there is a high level of bacteria found in the water, and beach conditions pose a potential health risk.

Parents, caregivers and youth are invited to an information evening to learn more about the dangers of opioids. Illicit fentanyl, a highly potent opioid, has been confirmed in the Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox & Addington area in a variety of fake prescription pills and other street drugs, such as cocaine, crystal meth, heroin, and marijuana. Illicit fentanyl is known to be deadly in small amounts, making the risk of overdosing extremely high. Ingesting even a small amount can be fatal.
